What are the odds of harlequin babies living to adulthood?

The condition used to always be fatal, but neonatal care has been improving and survival rates have been increasing with the use of retinoids. I found some statistics saying that in a review of 45 cases, there were 25 survivors (56%), ranging in age from 10 months to 25 years and twenty deaths (44%) occurred from day 1 to day 52. The oldest known survivor is Nusrit “Nelly” Shaheen, who was born in 1984 and is in relatively good health.

Harlequin ichthyosis,

Harlequin ichthyosis,

Photo

I’ll get some more posts queue’d soon, maybe today, maybe not tho because I’m...

I’ll get some more posts queue’d soon, maybe today, maybe not tho because I’m sick. They take their time to show others interesting conditions a baby could be born with. I am actually glad this blog exists. It's interesting to know how one missing/extra chromosome, fluke of the genetic code or just sheer shot of misfortune can deform a baby to such level. If the offended person is appalled, then leave the page, no need to leave rude asks.

Thank you very much, I’m glad you like my blog! It is it something else?

The lips are actually turned inside out because of how tight the thick “scales” make the baby’s skin (this is called eclabium). It’s the same with the odd eyes they have at birth, and that condition is called ectropion.

It looks noisy and ok otherwise. Can they do corrective surgery or would it die? Can it actually see? Because it kinda looks like it's reacting to things around it

I am pretty sure that baby has a type of Pfeiffer Syndrome (I’m thinking Type III), in which case, here is some information I found:

“Although Pfeiffer syndrome has been linked to two different genes, it has also been broken down into three different subtypes based on physical findings: Type I, Type II and Type III. The difference between these three different types is not always clear. Type I is the most common, and is the mildest of the three types. Children with Type I Pfeiffer syndrome usually have normal intelligence. Type II and Type III represent the more severe types, and are more likely have both serious medical problems and impaired mental development. Type II can be differentiated from Type III in that the Type II children are born with a “cloverleaf” skull (also called Kleeblattschädel). Type III children are the most severely affected and do not have a typical cloverleaf skull shape. Both Types II and III are also associated with a greater risk of death early in life, and some centers have reported mortality rates from 25% to 85% in childhood. However, lower mortality rates are likely at the most experienced centers, especially those with a special interest in Pfeiffer syndrome). It is not possible to determine which subtype of Pfeiffer syndrome any child has by genetic testing alone (as it turns out, sometimes the same gene mutation that has been associated with Pfeiffer syndrome can also result in Crouzon syndrome).”

Also:

“Severe complications of this syndrome involve respiratory complications and hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is defined as an over production of fluid inside the brain, resulting in brain malfunction if no treatment is performed. Respiratory problems may be brought about by deformities in the trachea or the underdevelopment of the midface. Several people may have a tracheostomy or an incision in the trachea. Death can be brought about by serious brain deformities, respiratory difficulties, prematurity, and complications brought about by surgery. Even with no hydrocephalus, there will still be mental retardation and delays in development. Low set eyes may be so serious that the child is incapable of closing his or her eyelids.”

marruin:
